MANILA, Philippines–Five children were killed in their sleep as the fire engulfed their temporary shelter tent in the typhoon-hit Tacloban City in Province before dawn Wednesday.
Kathleen Osenar, 12; Justine Osenar, 9; Jasmine Osenar, 5; Juvylyn Osenar, 3; and Jacklyn Osenar, three months old, perished in a fire that broke out in their makeshift house in the tent city that was built for super typhoon “Yolanda” (international name: Haiyan) survivors.
Fire Senior Superintendent Pablo Cordeta, Eastern Visayas regional director of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), said in an interview with Radyo Inquirer 990 AM that the tent city was a Barangay (village) Brava Costa in San Jose, Tacloban City.
Cordeta said the still unnamed mother of the fatalities and one of her children survived the fatal incident.
Based on the investigation, the fire, which started at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, was caused by an unattended kerosene lamp.
“The fire was immediately put out but the fire was quick to spread,” Cordeta said.
He added that the casualties were brought to the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center after the incident.
Tacloban City bore the brunt of one of the strongest typhoons ever recorded in November 2013. In the said city alone, more than 5,000 died.
