MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang yesterday hailed Gilas Pilipinas for giving their all despite losing to Puerto Rico Wednesday night, leading to the country’s eventual elimination from the International Basketball Federation World Cup.
The country qualified for the FIBA World Cup after a nearly 40-year hiatus.
Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said although Gilas Pilipinas failed to trounce Puerto Rico, their performance was remarkable.
“Filipinos are proud of our players,” he said in Filipino.
“In my opinion, we must continue our support for Gilas Pilipinas and must be proud of them.”
Coloma said all is not lost yet since they still have to campaign for the Asian Games in South Korea later this month.
The players proved their mettle consider- ing the close fight, he added. – With Delon Porcalla
