Amid mounting commuter complaints due to congestion, Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) announced that it is planning to implement an express train scheme.
“The DOTC-MRT3 will be dispatching express trains during peak hours from Monday to Friday (except holidays),” said posts on MRT stations Monday.
It was scheduled for launch April 30, but the train’s operators said Tuesday that the “experimental implementation of express train schedule is on hold” until further notice.
Under the scheme, some of the trains plying the railway along EDSA during peak hours will skip some of the stations. The trips will follow a schedule now posted on stations.
To determine whether or not a train arriving at a certain time will stop at their destinations, you need to take note of this express train coding system prepared by MRT-3:
- Code 1N trains will stop at Taft, Magallanes, Cubao, Kamuning, Quezon Avenue and North Avenues stations
- Code 2N trains will stop at Taft, Ayala, Cubao, Kamuning, Quezon Avenue and North Avenue Stations
- Code 3N trains will stop at Taft, Buendia, Cubao, Kamuning, Quezon Avenue and North Avenue stations
Express train schedules posted so far show that the service will be available between 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Both earliest and latest express train trips will be from Taft Station.
MRT-3 came up with the scheme after it drew flak from commuters for congestion in its coaches and train stations, with queues overflowing to streets and causing traffic buildup.
Malacanang has also come under fire for telling commuters to try other forms of public transport given the problems with MRT-3, a statement Filipinos seen as condescension.
The government has vowed to upgrade the train system by purchasing more coaches. These are not expected to arrive until 2015, however, officials have said.
