Bride Kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan

12:58 AM

A John Cruzoe Perspective

“Bride Kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan” is a video documentary presentation uploaded by VICE (a YouTube channel).  It is a 30 minute, or so, production revealing Kyrgyzstan’s unique way of uniting a man and a woman for marriage. It involves women being KIDNAPPED.

For most of us who are oblivious of Kyrg’s customs and traditions, we find this very sickening, disgusting, horrifying, disturbing, and shocking. For us, we would simply not understand. Same as for them, they wouldn’t understand couples of the civilized world have to go through: dating, courtship and most importantly the diamond ring on your knees proposal. Probably to them, this course of action is too bizarre.

In the video, you will see that a young man of marrying age, 15 or 16, will spot any women he wishes to kidnap and marry, then make a detailed plan on how to capture the unsuspecting female. Next, this self appointed groom will put the plan into play. Arrangements includes: the method of abduction, a banquet prepared by the groom’s family, a force working group and an apology committee.

The force working group is actually the groom’s female relatives restraining and compelling the bride to-be to marry the groom.  In other words, they use force to the abductee to get hitched with the groom, against her will.  As soon as she’s been taken to the groom’s household, the force working group will put on a veil and wedding garments, while the abductee violently struggles for her rights, at the same time insist on her that she will be happy in marriage.  It takes a day to several days, even more, for them to make the bride submit to their demands.

Once she “agrees” to the marriage, it’s the turn of the apology committee to go to the bride’s family and seek for forgiveness. As a goodwill gesture for their heinous undertaking, the apology committee will bring heaps of material gifts and a sheep as a token for exchange for the bride. In short, their daughter traded for a sheep. Subsequently, both families will have a formal meal together.

From the day the bride has been abducted until the night the couples consummate, the groom’s family will treat the bride resembling a Queen. Dress her up elegantly Kyrgyzstanish fashionable wedding garments, gear her up with accessories and feed her like royalty.

Astonishingly, the first day of the couples’ married day the poor bride becomes a maid to prove herself if she is worthy to the family or not. She must serve the groom’s relatives, clean up, cook and do a never ending list of chores.

To the Kyrgys, this is a tradition being practiced since the ancient of old. To me, this way of thinking is purely a pile of manure. This kind of society lacks education to put it more bluntly.

Kyrgyztan is an Islamic country. I am assuming that this is against the teachings the Islamic faith. Which makes me ask why an Imam presides over the matrimonial ceremony.

Personally, this is a shallow excuse for marriage by way of “tradition”. This is more of a means of satisfying the lustful urges of a Kyrgyztany man. They do not have the balls to court a woman. They do not have the balls to ask a Kyrgyztan woman for a drink. Kyrgyztan men will force the women to submit because they lack the courage and education of a real gentleman.

The documentary will show you that this method of marriage has led a lot of women to commit suicide, marriages have been broken, spousal abuses have been widespread and children have been mistreated.  There are some that led a life of peace and happiness. But the question is…”Was there real happiness in this union of marriage”?  I doubt it. Forced happiness I suppose, if there is such a term.

Bride kidnapping is barbaric and inhumane. Women should not be treated like this in any part of the world. The United Nation MUST send missionaries to alter the way the Kyrgyztanies think about marriage. Islamic leaders MUST make a stand on this so called tradition.

It’s just wrong.
