A Nepalese ex-soldier, Bishnu
Shrestha, was just minding his own business and wanted peace and well deserved
rest and recreation. Coming from his position as a Naik (Corporal) in the 7th
Battalion of the 8th Gurkha Infantry – a famous, battle-hardened regiment of
the Nepalese army, Bishnu was on his way home to his family.
Ejoying the crisp of the evening,
Bishnu sat quietly enjoying the view as the locomotive pass by picturesque
villages. Perhaps in his mind, he was already organizing all the activities he
would love to do with his family. After
a life of constant fighting, Bishnu is now planning to settle down and build a
family in the quiet mountain of his native soil.
What seems to be a gentle night
on the train, everything changes into a horrifying event. Passengers popping
from their seats suddenly pulled out various types of weapons: pistols, knives,
picks, swords and clubs to carry out a heist on a horrifying degree towards
unsuspecting passengers.
The ruffians walked slowly along
the aisle of the train and collected every passenger’s valuables and
threatening each passenger if they did not comply. Bishu handed over his wallet
and decided to be silent and make no issue of what was happening. Seeing that he was outnumbered, it was just
reasonable for him to stay away from trouble and do nothing. Besides, it was
not worth fighting for a few pieces of currency which he had in his wallet.
The crooks went on with their
plan, to steal everything from everybody that has some value. Beside BIshnu was
an 18 year old girl who got the attention of the soulless monsters. They
grabbed the poor girl and slashed her blouse, apparently to (gang) rape her.
This was the cue for Bishnu
Shrestha that things were getting out of line.
The thugs’ mistake was they never checked BIshnu’s pockets for weapons. Bishnu was carrying a kukri (knife with a curved blade that broadens towards the point, esp as used by
Gurkhas).
Bishnu drew out his weapon and
rescued the woman from being victimized.
He grabbed the perpetrator who was on top of the woman and used him as a
human shield to fend of other hooligans who were going to attack him.
It was a bloody encounter.
Everything was surreal, similar to watching a violent Hollywood film, wherein
the hero kills a thousand enemies. Bishnu was struck on his arm, however with
his adrenaline pumping he seemed to be invincible on that very moment.
He incapacitated the leader with
his kukri and the rest of the minions simply jumped off the train in fright.
The whole incident happened within 20 gory minutes which appeared to be without
end for BIshnu. As the train stopped onto the next station, police were already
waiting to apprehend the injured and dying gangsters, and were able to recover 40
gold necklaces, 200 cell phones, 40 laptops, and nearly $10,000 in stolen cash.
Wounded passengers were given medical attention.
Bishnu Sherestha was rightfully
awarded by the Indian government and was given the bounty of the hooligans as a
reward.
Eventually, like a true hero,
Bishnu Shrestha did not seek for any gratitude for he just did what he was
suppose to do. The family of the girl he saved offered him a reward of $6,500,
but BIshnu opted not to collect it.
"Fighting the enemy in
battle is my duty as a soldier. Taking on the thugs on the train was my duty as
a human being." - Bishnu Shrestha
